Abstract
A deficiency in thyroid hormone may result in reduced mammary growth, although the rat appears to be an exception in this respect (Kragt and Meites, 1965). Since hypothyroidism has been found to be associated with a decrease in secretion of pituitary LTH (McQueen-Williams, 1935; Meites and Turner, 1947 a), of STH, and ACTH (Contopoulos, Simpson and Koneff, 1958) as well as with irregularities in FSH-LH secretion (Leathem, 1959), the retardation of mammary development may be partly secondary to changes in secretion of these hormones. There is evidence that thyroid hormones can stimulate LTH and perhaps STH secretion by the rat anterior pituitary.
