Abstract

In the four years since the first fetal transfusion was carried out by Dr. W. Liley in New Zealand, we have made some progress in our understanding of the place fetal transfusions have in severe erythroblastosis fetalis. There is little doubt now as to the effectiveness of this treatment, if it is carried out on carefully selected fetuses by skilled experienced teams. The problem at this time is to define when such a procedure is indicated and most effective. The original enthusiasm for the procedure has now been tempered by the realization that this procedure is only indicated in a small number of sick fetuses (Lucey and Butterfield, 1966; Karnicki and Holman, 1966; Bishop et al., 1967; Westberg and Margolis, 1965; Connan et al., 1967; Friesen et al., 1967; Bowman, personal communication, 1967).
