The Effect of Neurohypophysial Hormones and Similar Polypeptides on the Uterus and other Extravascular Smooth Muscle Tissue

  • Chapter
Neurohypophysial Hormones and Similar Polypeptides

Abstract

In this review attention will be principally directed to the effects of neurohypophysial hormones and their analogues on the smooth muscle of the uterine portion of the oviduct. The effects on other non vascular smooth muscle will be considered at less length. Because of the wide scope of the subject, certain areas will be discussed cursorily, and the interested reader will be referred when possible to review articles or specific papers which deal in depth with that particular subject area. The literature of the past 20 years is covered in some depth, especially as it relates to the neurohypophysial hormones and analogues directly. However, in areas of background information, e. g., the physiology of uterine contractions, review articles will be cited principally. The author has endeavored to make the text readable rather than have it a mere citation of the literature.

Some of the author’s cited unpublished data were supported by Research Grant HD-290651 from the National Institutes of Health.
