We have stated that we are mainly after principles rather than computational methods. The principles are sometimes stated in terms of theorems, sometimes in terms of explicit formulas. We use real variable theory in its exact rigor. Thus, while we must in any application admit approximation in the formulas we start with, we do not admit any in our analyses. This allows to build mathematical structures of more than one stage, as, for instance, in Chapter VII, and to go rather further than one might expect without resorting to machine methods.
