The Thymus and Immune Responses

  • Chapter
The Thymus

Abstract

As previously described, thymic lymphoid proliferative activity appears to be independent of antigenic stimulation and characteristically the thymus cortex lacks lymphoid follicles and germinal centres and contains very few plasma cells. From this it might be assumed that the thymus itself is not actively involved in local immune responses. This has been confirmed by direct studies on the production of antibodies by thymus tissue and on the immune competence of thymic lymphoid cells.
