Abstract

In this article we are interested primarily in the techniques of research utilizing neutrons from reactors. We shall not be concerned with the fundamental theory of neutron interactions nor in a review of the results obtained with reactor research, for these subjects are treated elsewhere in the Handbuch. Thus the slowing down of neutrons, which is important in producing the particular neutron spectra available at reactors, is fully described in Part 2 of Vol. XXXVIII. Similarly, the results of reactor neutron research concerning neutron resonances and energy levels, as well as the general properties of the nuclear reactions involved, are considered in the articles by Burcham and by Rainwater in Vol. XL. Fission, the particular reaction so important to nuclear reactors, is discussed in Part 2 of Vol. XLI. One of the most important applications of reactor neutrons is in the field of “neutron optics ” and here the fundamental theory, as well as a survey of results, is given in the article of Ringo in Vol. XXXII; here we shall be careful to limit our treatment to the techniques themselves.
