Abstract
Patient care guidelines have always been available to the practicing physician. They come in the form of textbooks, professorial opinions, consensus of the experts, algorithms, and decision trees, etc. These guidelines have identified practices that are considered to be standard and acceptable which in turn, were determined by whatever practices were in common use at the particular time. Guidelines have been referred to as practice policies, standards of care, practice parameters, etc. The simplest method of guideline development, whether it involves individuals or groups, requires experts to process in their heads all the important information and requires anybody using this guideline to take the experts’ opinion on faith.
