Abstract

Anticipated climate change, or greenhouse warming, presents an unprecedented challenge to humanity. In many regions, the ecological changes which may be expected to accompany unrestrained climatic change will dwarf the consequences of other sorts of environmental stress. In other locations, pressures of development not directly related to climate may be of greater importance. But even there, climatic and development not directly related to climate may be of greater importance. But even there, climatic and development shifts will inevitably interact in their action on the biosphere. It is no exaggeration to say that the coming warming, in conjunction with other forces, may remake the natural world.
