Abstract
A continental deep drilling offers a decisive possibility to test crustal models which have been proposed from different viewpoints by the various geoscientific disciplines. Thus, the data and knowledge obtained from the planned deep drilling have a fundamental meaning for the earth sciences. It can immediately be seen that the combined use of the established and of the new geophysical, petrological, and geological methods within the “Continental Deep Drilling Program” offer a new basis for fruitful exploration of the earth’s crust.
