Abstract

The pathogenesis of inflammatory demyelinating diseases and especially of multiple sclerosis has puzzled scientists of many medical disciplines during the past decades. Several different theories have been proposed regarding the pathogenetic factors responsible for, or involved in, the formation of the lesions. The most important still discussed in recent publications and reviews are autoimmunity (Lumsden 1971; Seitelberger 1967; Frick 1979; Lisak 1980), infection (Steiner 1931; Pette 1928; Waksmann 1980), vascular changes (Putnam 1935; Field 1979), and metabolic or toxic factors (Marburg 1906; Field 1979; Wolfgram 1979).
