Summary

The application of reliability planning is shown using, as an example, the “employment of process computers in automation and control”. An investigation into the fault tolerance of computer systems forms the focal point of this contribution. Aspects of fault tolerance are evaluated on the basis of a reliability model and the numerical results are discussed. It is shown how general rules for future system planning may be derived from these system analyses.

The effect of quality assurance measures on the overall system performance and on the system economics is evaluated in terms of the system effectiveness. A possible mathematical model is discussed.
