Abstract
The criteria of institutional standardisation, for terminology, even when new coinages are sought, are at variance — when it comes to the willingness to admit a given neologism — from the range of neologisation devices one enounters in language in general, and in literary or connotated, emotionally loaded language in particular, as opposed to terms formed for the purposes of referential (possibly technical) usage. Understanding and contrasting such devices ought to be considered beneficial for terminologists even when the latter are specifically concerned with the technical sublexicon (or more generally with the ergolect) of a given professional domain [54]. We provide an illustration by means of examples of neologisms or exercises at neologisation. This is the first in a pair of articles, and is introductory. In Part II, more systematic exemplification will be provided from a few disciplinary domains.
