Fundamentals of Nucleation Theory

Abstract

Chapter 1 presents a systematic introduction to classical nucleation theory. We consider thermodynamics of phase transitions, surface phenomena, formation energies and growth rates of different nuclei. The main goal of the chapter is to formulate and justify the macroscopic approach, the basic kinetic equations, the stationary state and the Zeldovich nucleation rate.
