Abstract
Greece has more than 100 inhabited small and big islands. The majority of them are geographically scattered in small distances in the Aegean Sea. Although they are close each other, they are not served by a stable and convenient coastal network system, e.g. many islands are not served frequently (especially in winter) with the mainland ports or with other islands’ major ports. Many of the coastal transport lines cannot exist without being subsidized by the Government. These two rather problematic situations characterize the Greek coastal network system and affect everyone who lives, work or visit the islands. Our aim is the development of an integrated and holistic spatial information system, for the effective design of coastal transportation lines giving solutions to the above mentioned problems. This paper will summary present the description of the current situation in coastal transport system in Aegean Sea, the preliminary system’s specifications and data collection issues.
