Abstract
Reconstruction of upper and lower lip defects requires a delicate balance between esthetic concerns and functional results. Early complications of lip reconstruction include wound dehiscence, hematoma, wound infection, flap necrosis, and early esthetic concerns (misalignment of the vermilion border). Late complications involve changes after wound maturation and include scar contracture resulting in retraction of the vermilion, loss of lip height and lip fullness, blunting of the commissures, misalignment of the vermilion border, loss of oral competence affecting speech and swallow function, microstomia, scar hypertrophy, and chronic pain. This chapter will focus on the diagnosis and management of those complications following lip cancer reconstruction.
