Abstract
Melanocytic nevi on the skin of palms and soles, nail matrix or bed, knees, and elbows frequently show an upward scatter of single melanocytes and usually have an irregular distribution of junctional melanocytes. These peculiar characteristics may have led to the erroneous idea that nevi on acral skin were premalignant and still account for misdiagnosis as melanoma or as melanoma in situ. In reality, nevi on acral skin are hardly ever a precursor of melanoma.
