Abstract
Problems of optimal design of circular cylindrical shells with internal supports are studied. The behaviour of ideal plastic shells under distributed transverse pressure and axial tension is prescribed with a geometrically non-linear theory of thin shells accounting for large deflections. It is assumed that the shell is made of unidirectionally reinforced composite.
Optimal positions for additional supports are determined in the cases when the supports are absolutely rigid, ideal linear elastic or semi-elastic supports. The effectivity of the design is evaluated numerically in the case when the cost of the design is assessed by the mean deflection.
