Abstract
The fact that the field of uncertainty split into a probabilistic and an alternative school, which follow independent research directions, indicates that some key issue in the debate on the treatment of uncertainty has not been addressed properly. We conjecture that the issue concerns a philosophical element contained in the criticisms raised by the alternative school against probability. This element is exemplified by what we call the non-adequacy claim.
