Zusammenfassung
Das Wort „Autonomie“ leitet sich von den griechischen Begriffen „autós“ und „nómos“ her und bedeutet wörtlich „Selbstgesetzgebung“; die Konzepte „Autonomie“ und „Selbstbestimmung“ sind mithin unmittelbar verwandt. Beide bezeichnen im allgemeinsten Verständnis das Vermögen handlungsfähiger Entitäten, ihr eigenes Verhalten oder die Angelegenheiten innerhalb einer ihnen zuerkannten Domäne frei und nach eigenen Maßstäben zu bestimmen, wobei an diese Maßstäbe in aller Regel zusätzliche Konsistenz- oder Rationalitätsansprüche angelegt werden. Dieses allgemeine Verständnis bietet Raum für eine Vielfalt unterschiedlicher Konzeptualisierungen, je nachdem, wie Freiheit von Zwang und Manipulation, wie die jeweilige Domäne freier Selbstbestimmung und wie die Ansprüche an die Rationalität der jeweiligen Entität und der von ihr anerkannten Entscheidungsmaßstäbe gefasst werden. Als „autonom“ werden indes nicht nur handlungsfähige Entitäten, sondern auch ihre Handlungen selbst bezeichnet, nämlich insofern sie als Ausdruck bzw. als Aktualisierung des Autonomievermögens verstanden werden können.
