Zusammenfassung
Die Entwicklung des Gedächtnisses bei Kindern und Jugendlichen stellt nach wie vor ein zentrales Thema der kognitiven Entwicklungspsychologie dar. Schon vor mehr als hundert Jahren interessierte die Frage, was genau unter Gedächtnis zu verstehen ist und wie es sich aufbaut. Vor allem vor dem Hintergrund der bahnbrechenden Arbeiten Flavells, in deren Zentrum die Frage stand, ob intentionale Gedächtnisstrategien als „Mediatoren“ oder auch „Motoren“ der Gedächtnisleistung anzusehen sind und wie diese dann die Leistung in unterschiedlichen Altersgruppen beeinflussen, sind in den 1960er-Jahren grundsätzliche entwicklungspsychologische Gedächtnisvorgänge aufgedeckt worden. Zu ihrer Aufklärung hat dabei gleichzeitig die Etablierung einer Reihe allgemeiner Informationsverarbeitungstheorien beigetragen. Mittlerweile besteht deshalb in Bezug auf das Gedächtnis eine relativ große Übereinstimmung in der Begriffsbestimmung und den zentralen Modellannahmen.
