Abstract

Surgical treatment of spinal disorders requires a detailed understanding of anatomy and surgical approaches to optimize access to the spinal column through safe and reliable channels. Collateral damage or iatrogenic injury to the adjacent tissues during exposure of the spine cannot always be avoided, but it should be minimized without compromising the exposure necessary to achieve the surgical goals.
