An Experiment for Detection of Underwater Intruders with Different Kinds of Sensors

Abstract

Ships and infrastructure in harbours can be threatened by underwater intruders. Possible intruders are e.g. divers. A common characteristic of these threats is their low velocity and target strength, which makes them very difficult to detect. Further problems are the challenging environmental conditions in harbours and in the roads. Due to the usual extremely shallow water conditions, there are a high number of false alarms. Furthermore, ambient noise is very high because of ship traffic and harbour infrastructure. In the EDA project HaPS (Harbour and Base Protection Systems), which is a cooperation of Sweden, Italy, Norway and Germany, the detection of and reaction to possible threats in harbours are investigated theoretically and in sea trials.
