Abstract

During his first overseas study leave period from Tohoku University, Professor Kazuyoshi Takayama spent two years working with my father, Professor Irvine Israel Glass, in Toronto, Canada. As we stood at my father’s graveside not long after his death, Prof. Takayama told me that not only was my father his academic mentor, but he was also his “spiritual father”. This is indeed a supreme compliment to my father both as a teacher and a human being. It is also a tribute to Professor Takayama’s own capacity to connect in a profound way with other people, and to his openness and generosity.
