Abstract

To protect active traffic against link or node failures in multi-hop communications networks, several so-called protection schemes have been introduced in the past. The most established ones are path, segment, node and link protection. However, these schemes are limited as challenges are modelled abstractly whereas challenges in real networks can have very different characteristics. Thus, we propose to explicitly take the high impact challenges by introducing a risk-group concept into the multi-path placement scheme, which provides an evaluation of the likelihood of a challenge to simultaneously affect two network elements. We have implemented and evaluated this new methodology in simulations and show that it outperforms the original scheme.
