Symbioses Galore

  • Yiannis Manetas

Symbioses, ranging from the honest coexistence of mutual benefit to parasitism, are evident in all organisms. In this chapter, various kinds of symbioses involving plants are described, with emphasis on two cases of global importance: those between some plants and nitrogen-fixing bacteria, and those between most plants and fungi. Moreover, the unique case of a moving animal with acquired photosynthetic capacity is presented: the marine slug Elysia chlorotica recruits and maintains in its body algal chloroplasts.
