This chapter presents some examples of experimental and numerical investigation of mass transport in porous media. Simple and inexpensive experimental techniques are described for the measurement of tortuosity, molecular diffusion coefficients, and axial and radial dispersion coefficients in a packed bed of inert particles. The mass transfer process between a moving fluid and a soluble solid mass buried in a packed bed of small inert particles with uniform voidage is also described. Numerical solutions of the partial differential equations describing solute mass conservation are undertaken (for solute transport by both advection and diffusion).
