Strategies and Actions to Improve Risk Communication Competency in Radiation Medicine

Improvements in practitioner competency in radiation risk communication support quality and patient-centered care and enhance patient understanding by providing evidence-based information on radiation risks. Strategies, actions, and approaches are discussed to improve teaching, learning, implementation, and evaluation. The key to successful teaching is to provide contents and employ methodologies appropriate to the recipients. Actions that would encourage the learning and application of these skills are complementary. Supporting strategies include the advocacy and promotion of education, the research into radiation effects and adult education, the strengthening of education infrastructures, and the implementation of relevant policies. These efforts will be enhanced by an inclusive approach with leadership, collaboration, and participation.
