Competence in the Professions: Expanding Opportunities and Emerging Practices

In this chapter, educators Hibbert and Chhem consider the emergence of “competence” in the profession and look at how radiology departments might consider expanding on what they are doing to create “emerging practices” better able to develop competencies that go beyond those easily measured. The authors discuss the origins of the competency movement and differences in perspectives of competence. Considerations of the relationship between how we define competence and how we measure competence are taken up in light of the overall purpose it is intended to serve. The implications of cultural competence are examined, and an adaptation of Miller’s framework for clinical assessment is included to differentiate between competence that is developed on a continuum over time and distinguishes between the candidate who “knows,” “knows how,” “shows how,” and “does.” The authors end with recommendations for faculty preparation in order to ensure that a broad spectrum of competency is understood and applied.
