Abstract
We proposed a single-band infrared sensor based passive ranging method without using extinction coefficient, in which radiation intensity ratio between adjacent sampling instances is used to eliminate the effects of the atmospheric extinction coefficient. An equation of using the ratio of radiation intensity between two adjacent sampling instances to estimate the distance ratio between them is developed, in which the irrational assumption of constant target radiation intensity over an extended period is removed. Additionally the proposed method is verified by simulation which demonstrates satisfactory distance estimation.
