Zusammenfassung
Synapsen und Neurotransmitterrezeptoren sind Schlüsselelemente der Signalübertragung zwischen Neuronen unterschiedlichster Netzwerke und ermöglichen somit erst die Komplexität und Vielfalt der Leistungen, zu denen unser Gehirn fähig ist. Untersuchungen zum strukturellen Aufbau von Synapsen sowie zur Verteilung, Dichte und möglichen Kolokalisation von Neurotransmitterrezeptoren haben mittlerweile einen sehr aktuellen Bezug hinsichtlich der Zunahme neurologischer und neurodegenerativer Erkrankungen weltweit. Derartige Erkrankungen, wie beispielsweise Schizophrenie oder Morbus Alzheimer, lassen sich letztlich auf massive strukturelle Veränderungen an Synapsen bzw. auf die Verschiebung der Balance zwischen Erregung und Hemmung im Gehirn zurückführen und erklären damit die Dysfunktion dieser Strukturen. Den strukturellen Aufbau einzelner Synapsen bzw. die Dichte und Verteilung und mögliche Kolokalisation von Neurotransmitterrezeptoren und deren Untereinheiten in verschiedenen Gehirnregionen haben wir bis ins Detail untersucht und anschließend in virtuellen dreidimensionalen Modellen nachgestellt.
