The increasingly negative impact of changes in the global climate on our planet’s ecosystems and, in particular, on the functioning of the oceans, is a matter of growing concern for the community of States. This was clearly demonstrated by the tense discussions that took place prior to and during the Copenhagen round of negotiations held in 2009 within the framework of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change.
