Nonvillous Parts and Trophoblast Invasion

  • First Online:
Pathology of the Human Placenta

Abstract

The nonvillous parts of the placenta include the chorionic plate, cell islands, cell columns, and the extravillous trophoblast derived from them that invades the endometrium and contributes to the formation of placental septa and the basal plate (Fig. 9.1). In contrast to the villous parts of the placenta, they do not participate in maternal-fetal exchange since they are never vascularized by both the maternal and fetal circulations.
