Abstract

Among trophoblastic neoplasms, choriocarcinoma is the most well-known. The classification of gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) has been alluded to in the previous chapter, and Soper et al. (1994) who evaluated 454 tumors according to three classifications found the prognostic aspects to be fairly similar among these otherwise divergent classifications. The clinical staging has so far provided the best prognostication. An excellent and concise review of “chorionic tumors” has summarized recent progress made in understanding and therapy of these lesions (Berkowitz and Goldstein 1996). A checklist for the characterization of trophoblastic malignancies has been published by Lage (1999) and several other noteworthy reviews among many others are those by Silverberg and Kurman (1992), Baergen (1997), Baergen and Rutgers (1997), and others (Seckl et al. 2010; Lurain 2010; Horowitz et al. 2009; Berkowitz and Goldstein 2009).The classification of GTD which includes trophoblastic neoplasms as well as nonneoplastic benign conditions, recently endorsed by the WHO (Tavassoli and Devilee 2003), is the most widely used and is shown in Table 23.1.
