In earlier stages of our education, we learn that all things in universe can be put in two mutually exclusive compartments. In one compartment, it is matter, and in the second, it is energy. Matter is that which has mass and occupies certain space, while energy is a capacity of doing work. This gave rise to two fundamental laws, namely (1) conservation of mass and (2) conservation of energy. But in higher classes, we were told that Albert Einstein combined the two concepts into one, which became the principle of equivalence of mass and energy.
