Occipital Cervical Stabilization with Rod-Screw Systems

Modern screw-based occipitocervical constructs enable immediate stabilization of the craniocervical junction (Dickman et al., J Neurosurg 74:190–198, 1991; Finn and Apfelbaum, Neurosurgery 66(3 Suppl):184–192, 2010; Vender et al., Neurosurg Focus 16:E9, 2004). Various screw trajectories allow for concomitant decompression and the creation of biomechanically stable constructs in a broad array of conditions. Bony fusion is successful in >95% of cases without requiring the use of rigid external immobilization. The goals of segmental instrumented occipitocervical fusion are stabilization of the craniocervical junction, reduction of deformity, minimization of segments immobilized, and bony fusion of instrumented segments.
