Abstract

Computer haptics is defined as the art and science of developing software algorithms that synthesize computer-generated forces and tactile stimuli to be displayed to the user for the perception and manipulation of virtual objects via touch. In the real world, a person can move his/her hand in order to touch an object. As soon as the fingertip touches the object, the object exerts a reaction force back against the finger to prevent it from penetrating the object. The person feels this force, along with the object’s texture, through muscle and mechanoreceptors.
