Sorption of Uranium on Iron Coated Sand in the Presence of Arsenate, Selenate, and Phosphate

Abstract

Batch and column experiments were performed with solutions containing 0.5 μmol/l uranium in the absence and presence of selenate, arsenate and phosphate with equimolar concentrations at a pH of about 6.5. Iron(hydr)oxide surfaces are known for their strong interaction with arsenate and phosphate in solution. However, uranium binds much stronger than arsenate while selenate binds only to a minor extend. Sorption of uranium differs when arsenate, selenate, or phosphate is present in solution. With arsenate present a slight decrease of uranium sorption was found, while phosphate and selenate enhanced sorption.
