Abstract

Safe and effective use of ultrasonic instrumentation for lipoplasty requires an understanding of both the technology and associated surgical methods that differ significantly in many ways from the basic tools and methods of suction-assisted lipoplasty. Over the past decade and a half, there have been three distinct generations of ultrasonic instrumentation for lipoplasty introduced to the market. In each subsequent generation, there have been design changes that improve the safety, efficacy, and usability of the equipment. The physics of ultrasound is discussed, and possible complications are described.
