Abstract

Parenchymal resection is mainly applied for removal tumors. The main problem is excessive intraoperative blood loss during this type of operation, which is associated with a high morbidity and mortality rates. As a result, different techniques based on radiofrequency (RF) currents have been developed to minimize intraoperative blood loss. We studied a bipolar cooled electrode in order to assess the effect of different design parameters (electrode geometry, electrode gap, and electrode insertion depth in the tissue) on the thermal lesion geometry after RF heating. Computer modeling was based on the Finite Element Method (FEM), which was used to solve the coupled thermal-electrical problem.
