Abstract

The following is a list of all those national or “would be national” referendums in which the winning option gained 51% or less.

This phrase was used by the then Taoiseach, (PM) Bertie Ahern, after the 2002 poll on abortion. The obvious response was to ask, “So, what did they say?” (the author’s letter, Irish Times, 8.3.2002). It was also spoken by his predecessor, John Bruton, after the 1995 Irish divorce referendum. Most of the information used in this Appendix has been sourced either from Referendums around the World (Butler and Ranney 1994) and/or from a superb website run by the Université de Généve. http://www.c2d.ch/index.php%3E (Accessed 8 Nov. 2010).
