How to Develop Intercultural Competence in a Business English Classroom in Poland?

Abstract

This article examines the ways in which English may be interpreted depending on the context and expectations of the participants in the world of business. The focus is on explaining what intercultural competence is by making references to the model presented by Michael Byram. The author tries to answer the question of whether intercultural competence can be developed in the Polish context of a monolingual classroom and shows how this can be done in the case of Business English classes. The objective of such training, as free from cultural misunderstandings as possible, should incorporate developing in students the skills to mediate and the abilities to acquire desirable attitudes to otherness, foster empathy, promote tolerance and get engaged in the process of de-centering. Only then will they be able to survive in the global world of business and benefit rather than suffer from their intercultural experiences.
