Abstract
No other party body has seen a rise in importance and exposure equal to that of the European People’s Party (EPP) Summit. The Conference of Party and Government Leaders, as the Summit was called until 1995, was not foreseen in the original formation of the EPP. However, in parallel with the crucial role in the integration of Europe that the European Council played in the 1980s and 1990s, the EPP started to organise meetings with prime ministers and leaders from member parties. After several years themeetings were formalised, and they now take place regularly. As a result of their success, they have become central to the functioning of the EPP.The most recent offspring of the EPP Summits are the Ministerial Meetings,which offer the opportunity for ministers of European Union (EU)Member States who belong to EPP member parties to coordinate policiesin the run-up to Council of Ministers’ meetings.
