Abstract

Since the first detection of neutral hydrogen (H i) by Ewen and Purcell in 1951 [4], H i has been a valuable tool for understanding the structure and dynamics of the Milky Way. The first analysis of H i in the Milky Way was also published in 1951 [14] and surveys of the entire Galaxy were immediately undertaken. In the intervening years the atlas of H i in the Milky Way has been continually updated, culminating most recently with the one arcminute resolution International Galactic Plane Survey.
