Abstract

Non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL) comprise a heterogeneous group of malignant tumors arising from B, T or natural killer lymphocytes or their precursors (Pileri et al. 1998). They represent the most common malignancy of the immune system, with approximately 50,000 new cases diagnosed every year in the United States (Armitage 1997). These lymphomas have been increasing at a rate of approximately 4% per year in the past few decades and are now the fifth most common cause of cancer death in the United States (Lionberger and Armitage 2001).
