Zusammenfassung

Die Bezeichnung Prostata leitet sich von prostates, dem griechischen Begriff des Vorstehers ab. Dies deshalb, da die Vorsteherdrüse vom Steiß aus gesehen, unter und hinter der Harnblase und Harnröhre liegt. Die Prostata umgreift ringförmig die Harnröhre vom Blasenausgang bis zum äußeren Harnröhrenschließmuskel. Dorsal grenzt sie an das Rektum und ist von hier gut zu tasten. Dorsokranial der Prostata finden sich die Samenblasen und die Samenleiter. Die Samenleiter verlaufen schräg entlang der Prostata und münden am Samenhügel proximal des äußeren Harnröhrenschließmuskels in die prostatische Harnröhre.
