Abstract
This chapter provides an introduction and framework to the issues and dynamics faced by people with amputations and limb deficiencies at various ages and stages of externally-powered prosthetic fitting. It outlines the prevalence and causes of upper extremity amputation or limb deficiency, introduces some of the psychosocial issues and challenges affecting clients and their families and discusses some of the factors that influence the outcome of the prosthetic fitting process.
