Abstract

This chapter explains the origin and nature of the myoelectric signal (MES) as used in the control of powered prostheses. The first part of the chapter covers basic muscle anatomy and explains the contraction mechanism. This is followed by the electrophysiology associated with the contraction process and the resultant generation of the MES. Finally, the appearance of the MES, as obtained using surface electrodes from the wrist flexors of the author, is presented. These examples illustrate many of the points made throughout the chapter.
