Abstract
Dementia is a clinical syndrome characterized by impaired short- and long-term memory and associated with deficits in abstract thinking, judgment, and other higher cortical functions, or personality change; the disturbance interferes significantly with the activities of daily life. Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most common dementing disorder, affects approximately 4 million people in the United States. Although younger individuals can be affected, the age of onset is typically over 65, and the prevalence increases with age. The aging of the population in the developed world, coupled with the devastating impact of the disease and the costs of long-term care, have made AD an increasing public health concern. Therefore, it is not surprising that AD has long been a subject of functional brain imaging studies.
