Zusammenfassung

Die biologischen Vorgänge des Alterns sind eng mit Veränderungen des Gefäßsystems unter Ausbildung arteriosklerotischer Manifestationen verbunden. Dieser Zusammenhang wird dadurch untermauert, dass das Lebensalter einen wesentlichen unveränderbaren Risikofaktor der Arteriosklerose darstellt. Dabei ist das Altern als ein physiologischer Prozess zu betrachten, der mit einer zeitabhängig steigenden kardiovaskulären Morbidität und Mortalität verbunden ist, und zwar auch unabhängig vom Vorliegen anderer bekannter Arte- riosklerose-Risikofaktoren (Marin 1995). In diesem Sinne wurde von Max Bürger der Begriff „Physio- sklerose“ geprägt (Bürger 1960).
