Abstract
The recent discovery of neuronal progenitors capable of producing new neurons in adult mammals raises the possibility of repairing damaged tissue by recruiting their latent regenerative potentials. Recently, we showed that activation of endogenous progenitors by intraventricular infusion of a cocktail of FGF-2 and EGF, 2-5 days after ischemia, led to massive regeneration of hippocampal neurons after transient global ischemia in the adult rat forebrain. In this model, we investigated whether regenerated neurons can contribute to the intervention of neurological deficits caused by ischemic insults.
